Housing 03:16
I watched them go, their early morning ways The picket fence, the carts were in the lane And I ask myself often, why the women they never wear a summer dress? I listened low, and held my head up high The summer swell, the whiskey breath and rye We all know autumn's coming, and the harvest is soon under way My broken hands, have been stung a thousand times They're closing in, the wings have hit their stride 'Cause my heart's in the wasp bait, and I feel it I feel it in my soul

Giulianova 04:03
I lay my head back down, closer where the water's warm The footprints hit the ground, the people laugh the sunshine golden All along the coast, the mountain peaks they poke their heads outside The vineyards hug the road, with the olive branches shaking hands You must feel so damn old, living with that broken man You lie awake at night, felling like there must be something more But I digress, there's something killing you at night If you confess, then I can guide you through this mess The air is moist, it makes it hard to hear your voice Just call my name, you know I'll love you all the same The salty breeze you breathe it in, the love you've lost you're holding, you gotta hold it in Don't you know it's a damn shame with the sand between your toes, and the only thing that's on your mind are the ones you've left behind But I digress, there's something killing you at night If you confess, then I can guide you through this mess The air is moist, it makes it hard to hear your voice Just call my name, you know I'll love you all the same

Lakeland 03:13
You would not be hopeful, and I would be polite I made a list of all the good times, while you've been thinking about the bad I tried to be the right one, while you've been looking for the wrong guy I'm gonna whisper in your ear, the words that I've been dreaming up These days I'm counting on my six-string, you know I think like a machine You know the nights are getting longer, it's getting hard to keep a steady hand The Northern lights will never falter, the Prairie winds will always blow I'll read of lakes and count the hours on the clock, until my friends are gone, oh god I kissed you in the evening, and saw you in the halls Pretended I was reading, so maybe I would look sophisticated But I know you won't be portioned, I'm savvy of your type I'm gonna turn my face back home and you can catch the next flight Most days you're counting on your instinct, you're burning bridges breaking hearts Your body's missing all the small things, that you never thought you would recognize And if you're really such a victim, well I suppose that I'm to blame I'll read of lakes and count the hours on the clock, until my friends are gone, oh god

I told you before, I said I told you before by the old lakeshore I said that you would impress, I said that you would impress if you wore that green dress I took my hat to the door, I took my hat to the door when she asked me for more I looked her straight in the eye, I looked her straight in the eye as she started to cry They say good things come to those that never cry All the endless nights and your painful recollections I couldn't stand your whining, god must have taught me lesson It's been too damn long and it feels so wrong, to leave you with all of your beauty Tonight I'll be at the bar don't you call me, oh don't you call So I walked into the woods, I took myself and some friends and we went to the woods I heard the trees up above, I heard the trees up above as they whistled your name They say good things come to those that often cry All my empty nights and the blank stares in your direction If I never had a heart I swear I'd never notice the difference And it's been so long since the feeling's dawned, I miss all your angst and your beauty Tonight I'll be at the bar, won't you call me Oh won't you call

January 04:24
My lungs cry and I can't breathe, the smoke blackens covers me I run North but I don't see, your elegant shadow Climb rooftops you wear the crown, those regal lights as you climb on down You've given back what you said you found, another piece of the puzzle A Friday evening dressed in red, your eyes flushed over yeah you tried to make it alone Your bleach blonde hair, those human eyes, and in between you compromise your love And I'll hold you close, if you're by my side When I see you ghost, it's got an elegant shadow I called you on better terms, there was tension in all of our words I could taste you I could taste your nerves, and all of your anger A frosty evening in the cold, well I'd been drinking yeah you said you'd meet me halfway Your bleach blonde hair, those human eyes, well I've become the man that you despise And I'll hold you close, if you're by my side When I see you ghost, it's got an elegant shadow

Hawks Above 04:40
I feel cool crisp rain on my furrowed brow, the Prairie canvas all around Whisper softly if you've gotta share a thought The hawks above are closing in All around my nervous hollow empty thoughts, today went faster than before A chevvy cries for air, a black cloud in the sky It marks the way for those to come I've been on the road, the valleys of deer and the hills of snow I still haven't found the love or a place to rest my head It's there in the fertile ground, the blood of a small dust town The blood and the sweat of father calling me back home I feel cool crisp rain on my furrowed brow, the Prairie canvas all around Whisper softly if you've gotta share a thought The hawks above are closing in

The Road 04:10
I drove the road a mile or so, just to feel the wind in my hair and go To the countryside, to hills, to the gravel pits and runaways Honey take my spot for the working day, it's a lazy Monday morning and a breath of fresh air The sky was wide, I was like a thunderstorm rolling by The fields were gold, I could hear the dissaproving tone of my mother's voice Well I took a chance on a perfect day, and it's paying off in spades I've got thirteen black cards And I'll never dance another day, 'cause I told you once before don't let me tell you again I cut my teeth with summer loving and the sun I cut my losses by giving up a dream for a steady paycheck I park my car in the alley, it's unlocked We're all uncertain until it stops I cut my teeth with summer loving and the sun I cut my losses by giving up a dream for a steady paycheck I park my car in the alley, it's unlocked We're all uncertain until it stops

Bankend 02:16
You follow me, you follow me to the border, you follow me just to see The summer nights, the Prairie heat took the rooftop, the Prairie heat took our thoughts away And no I can't save you, there's nothing in this town to save your soul You cut me down, you cut me down in the water, you cut me down in the sea As I walked home, the sun set West of the moonlight, the sun set West of that grid road And hell, you can't save me, there's nothing in this world to save my soul I'm stuck on the threshhold

about

The Last Best West" is an eight song collection of windswept thoughts and Prairie contemplations by Nick Faye and the Deputies. Written by Nick Faye over the summer and fall of 2010, the songs revisit vivid memories of small towns and family farms, lost romances and carefree summers spent along the sun soaked Qu'Appelle Valley.

I highly suggest listening to this album if you ever find yourself driving with the windows down a muddy Saskatchewan back road on a hot summer day. Thanks for listening!

about

Nick Faye regina, Saskatchewan

Nick Faye crafts timeless songs that honour this past, embracing the hopes, dreams and frustrations of life lived in the Canadian Prairies. Fusing this with a clear love of mid-90s Pop Rock (think Rick Dees and The Weekly Top 40 in 1999), he creates songs that stick in the mind like a prairie snowdrift - taking their sweet time to melt away, slowly revealing the hope of new beginnings to come. ... more
